Some of Cole's quotes in the book "Touching Spirit Bear" by Ben Mikaelsen include "You have to escape first, then deal with your problems" and "You won’t die if you say what you really think, not if you’re really honest with yourself.” These quotes show Cole's journey towards self-discovery and personal growth throughout the story.
Cole from touching spirit bear is the main character in the story, fifteen year old Cole Matthews grows up with an abusive father and a barbie doll mother. Cole's mother never defends herself or her son, against the abusive father.Because of Cole's harsh childhood he has learned to never show fear, to intimitate people and ultimately punish people when " they deserve it, " as his dad says to him before abuse. Cole has no respect for elders. I suspect this is because he has learned to drown out his fathers hurtful words. Cole has grown up all his life where his elders ( his father, and mother ) are terrible to him. I think Cole expects the same from all adults since he has grown up with two terrible ones. Cole shatters Peter Driscals head into the sidewalk.Because Peter told on him for stealing from a store. Cole is banished to an Alaskin island for one year to understand the depth of the crime he committed, and to respect and become one with nature.

Some examples of how cole is changing is that he continues to go to the pond and going for a dip. then he also goes carrying his ancestor rock up the hill then rolling his anger away. He is also changing because he feels really bad about peter and wants to help him and when peter comes to the island with cole he starts to beat cole up. if cole hadn't changed then he would have fought back but instead he didn't which shows that he truly is changing...:)
