To escape from his country. The king locked his son and him in the country. So daedalus escaped from his country with his son. Unfortuanetely, his son's wing's wax was melted by the sun, so he did not survive.
The legend is that they were held captive on Crete by King Minos (for whom Daedalus built the Labyrinth). To escape while Minos controlled the sea, Daedalus built wings for himself and his son Icarus. But Icarus flew too close to the Sun, melting the wax that held his wings together; he fell into the sea and drowned.
