How does L choose to die?

I don't think he really chose to die...Light actually beat him by manipulating Rem, the shinigami (By the way, L's cause of death was, of course, a heart attack).

Of course, if you want to argue that he chose his death, it could be because he didn't want to cause his only friend's downfall, or something like that.
