When landing conditions at Cape Canaveral forced the Shuttles to land at alternate sites (e.g., Edwards AFB), they were loaded onto a Boeing 747 aircraft that was specially modified to carry them back to Kennedy Space Center.

Once there, they were removed, then moved to a hangar where key components were removed for maintenance prior to use on the next mission. Examples of components removed for maintenance are the Ammonia Boiler System (main shuttle AC unit), Reaction Control System (RCS) actuator valves, Orbiter Maneuvering System (OMS) actuator valves, Main Engine Liquid Oxygen/Liquid Hydrogen valves, Power Units, etc..
