Since the USA is a member of NATO, NATO is far superior. NATO _without_ American support would be a pushover to the Russians.
A big part of that is that NATO is overreliant on American power. If they had to defend themselves with only their own resources, then most of the NATO nations would be forced to severely curtail their social welfare state and invest more heavily in defense.

Well yes and no. NATO was formed after WWII as an alliance against communist agression of countries in Europe that considered themselves allies of the United states. The communists formed the Warsaw Pact which was the communist countries that condidered themselves aligned with Russia to protect themselves from aggression by the west. So they are not really for or against each other. It is more like they have agreed to disagree and keep a close eye on each other.
