Emperor. The pope was going to crown him, but Napoleon took the crown away and crowned himself Emperor.
It can be, for example, Emperor Butterfly or Emperor Moth.
Napoleon bore the title Emperor from 1804 to 1814. He briefly re-assumed it in 1815 during the "Hundred Days" period.
I would like to point out that correct title of Napoleon the Great was "Emperor of the French" and not "Emperor of France". He wasn't the only Emperor to rule the French but the first one. The second and last one was his nephew and heir Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte (1808-1873). After a coup d'état he become Napoleon III Emperor of the French, from 1852 to 1870.

As Napoleon I, Napoleon Bonaparte was Emperor of the French. Thus he was emperor of a people, not of a nation, as he would have been had he been Emperor of France.
On 18 May 1804 and his Coronation was held on 2 December 1804, although his correct title was "Emperor of the French".
