Generally OpenOffice compares very well. The major issues I have with OO is with "Presenter" (the PowerPoint like module) The animations are not as good or easy to use as in MS PowerPoint. I find the Spreadsheet and the Word processor very good indeed.
In my opinion, Microsoft Office is too expensive for what it is. When you buy Microsoft Office, you are paying for the brand name. Open Office is free and simply looks less fancy than MS Office, but will do all of the same things that MS Office does. There's my two cents.
