How did Peter Pan get his powers?

Peter originally knew how to fly because - like all children - he was a bird when he was born. Even though he wasn't a bird anymore, he was still sure he could fly, and flew away to Kensington Gardens. But when the birds explained that he'd become a boy, he couldn't fly anymore. He appealed to Queen Mab of the fairies to help him fly home, and the fairies tickled him in the shoulders until he was airborne. But by the time he got there, his mother had another child and the window was closed, so he returned to the Gardens to live with the fairies.

Peter Pan was a bird when he was born; all children are, according to Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. He became (mostly) human when he was delivered (by the stork of course) to his parents. But he still believed he could fly, and when he heard his parents discussing his future as a grown-up, he flew away to Kensington Gardens. There he lived as a Betwixt-and-Between: part-bird, part-boy. He lost his ability to fly because he doubted it, but was granted it again by Queen Mab of the fairies.
