How and why does prim die?

Prim died because Gale and Beetee had thought of 'thinking like your enemy'. When Katniss reaches the city circle in the capitol, she clings to a flag pole and notices that there are people in front of the presidents mansion that are keeped in by barricade's. But Katniss notices something else, those aren't just people, they are children, ranging from toddlers to teenagers. She notices that the kids are very cold and hungry. A hovercraft marked with the Capitol seal drops silver parachutes for the children. The children understand what that means, blankets, food, gifts. They are wrong. Most of the parachutes simultaneously explode. District 13 medics rush in to help the kids who now lie-most unconscious, limbless, or dead- in the snow. Katniss first gets a glimpse of the blond braid going down her back. Then, as she yanks off her coat to cover a wailing child, she notices the duck tail formed by her untucked shirt. Katniss starts to push threw the crowd that has formed around the barricades ,that the guards have now started to break down, and screams prims name. Prim cathces sight of Katniss, An begin to say her name, But then, the rest of the parachutes go off, leaving Katniss heartbroken, and sisterless.

She dies in the 3rd book. She get killed because she goes into a pen of children that got bombed by exploding silver parachutes to help the kids and she is killed in the second explosion.

President Coin directed the bombing that resulted in Prim's death to weaken Katniss. This way, Katniss would be unable to get in the way of Coin's goal to become the new president of Panem.
