Prim has to die because it shows that not every story has a complete happy ending and someone dear to katniss has to die so we know what her reaction is. i know it's sad when prim dies i wish she didn't die. i cried. a lot.

Prim is helping the capitol kids after half the parachutes explode, and then the rest of the parachutes explode, including the one Prim's holding. In a matter of seconds Prim's on fire. Katniss has to suffer watching Prim die.
