He is seen as a lonely person who as a child was basically abandoned in his boarding school whilst everyone else was in there family environment , from here we see him lose his beloved sister in child birth (giving birth to Fred Scrooges nephew) and then losing Belle his betrothed because he focused far to much on work and making money
