Shariah deals with many topics, including crime, politics, and economics, as well as personal matters such as sexual intercourse, hygiene, diet, prayer, everyday etiquette and fasting.

Shariah is only a primary source of law in a few Muslim-majority countries. In other countries, the secular law of the land is what must always be applied by Muslims, in preference to Shariah. Shariah can continue to be followed on personal matters, as long as no law is broken in any attempt to enforce Shariah.
