According to Paul Tillich, the ultimate concern is the object of one's highest devotion and loyalty, that which gives meaning and purpose to life. It is the foundational focus that shapes one's identity and drives their actions and beliefs. Tillich believed that identifying and committing to an ultimate concern is essential for human fulfillment and spiritual well-being.
Psalm 19 describe God's "law" as "perfect" and "sure." God's "statutes" are described to be "right."
As Tillich did his postgraduate research on the writings of early nineteenth century idealist Friedrich Schelling (1775 - 1854), it is likely Schelling influenced his existential ontology. Tillichs ontology is said to be simply a restatement in a modern form of the idealism of men like Schelling. In addition, towards the end of his life Tillich expressed a degree of sympathy towards the philosophy of Buddhism, so it could be said that his ontology also came from this direction.
