VOIP is most commonly used terminology now-a-days which stands for "Voice over internet Protocol", which uses broadband internet rather than the public switched telephone network (as in traditional phone services). The basic steps involved in originating an Internet telephone call are conversion of the analog voice signal to digital format and compression and translation of the signal into Internet protocol packets for transmission over the Internet.

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is a way of sending your voice to someone else and visa versa. You need a microphone, speakers, and software for your computer, or a standalone piece of hardware that has a phone plug, and dial the person up. This also may require a service or membership with the company you get the software or hardware from.
