It feeds on insects which carry diseases to the Saguaro Cactus. The cactus begins to die, but the Gila Wood pecker 'saves' the cactus, you could say, by eating the insects and the harmed part of the cactus. The insects do not harm the bird.

Any predator that can get past its lethal bite. Rattlesnakes, coyotes, foxes, and wild cats are probably the most common consumers.
