Several different kinds of Spiders get called "banana spiders." Originally the name was probably attached to any spider that was discovered on a big bunch of bananas shipped in from south of the border. These spiders got attention because some of them may have been the wandering spiders from South America whose scientific name is Phoneutria. They are sometimes called "Brazilian wandering spiders" or "armed spiders." Their body length has a maximum of around two inches, and their coloration is an unremarkable dull brown. They have red chelicerae. (A spider's chelicerae are like pocket knives. The part that can easily be seen works like the handle, and the fangs work like the blade. The part you can see, the red part, corresponds to the handle, and it is out where you can see it.)
Another large spider, the so-called "Golden-silk orb weaver," is also sometimes called a banana spider. Their maximum body length is also around two inches. They are much more visually attracted. There are many species in the genus Nephila, and each one has a different and colorful color scheme. Their legs are also banded in attractive waysl
Brazilian wandering spiders can give deadly bites if they choose to give a human more than a warning "Let go of me!" bite. They usually bite humans in situations like a soldier crawling into a sleeping bag that is already occupied. But when they can see somebody approaching they rear back on their hind four legs, show their fangs, and make a great threat display.
Golden-silk orb weavers are not inclined to do anything but get away from humans, but if somebody squeezed or pinched one then it might give a defensive bite. The venom of these spiders does not cause serious medical problems.
