The Bass Guitar has two electromagnets at one end of the guitar, called Pick-Ups. These look like square metal panels with dots on them. The current from the amplifier gives the Pick-Ups a magnetic field. The vibrations of the strings affect the magnetic field and cause the current to fluctuate. This is a very simple system that converts the analogue vibrations of the strings into an analogue electrical signal.

The amplifier contains a transistor which uses the weak current from the instrument to control the stronger current that powers the speaker.
