Most species of bats use the same main form of communication, through scent, especially for mating. This is produced from nasal glands that enlarge during mating season, and become a major factor for bat to bat communication. It has been found that bats make other sounds, and many seem to be related to communicating, orexpressing emotions, with other bats. Some species, purr, buzz, and click often before mating. While some of the sounds might be ultrasonic, some species have been found to vibrate when resting and content, but not sleeping. Some tactical signals might be used but that seems to be debated. Also, when the mother and pup recognize one another, they make audible sounds, and the young vocalize an "isolation" cry that helps the "imprinting process" between mother and offspring. Plus, "honking" in some species may be used to help prevent midair collisions between foraging adults. But the use of echolocation does seem to assist individuals in locating active roosts and hibernation sites. For more details please see site listed below.
