cardinals are able to fly because they have light feathers and are very light.

as they flap their wings, they push air down wich makes the bird go up.

The Northern Cardinal can fly 25 miles per hour. Since the average bird can fly 19 to 37 mph, cardinals seem to be average fliers instead of very fast fliers.
