I work in sleep medicine as an RPSGT. I am familiar with two different studies similar to what you are saying. The first EEG recordings were done on cats who had parts of their skulls removed and electrodes were placed directly on the brain--this was before amplifiers were invented. The second is more closely related to your question. Parts of the brain have been removed from different animals in several studies--in some of the cats dreaming stopped. I can not recall at this time which part of the brain was removed. In mice, the animals died after dreams had stopped for about two weeks.
