A laser burns little (tiny tiny tiny) divots in the plastic photo sensitive bottom of the compact disc (the fancy bluish side) every time the code for the media tells it to. Basically a bunch of on off on off off messages all in row all very small all coresponding to information about how the monitor should display pixels and how the speaker should move to reproduce sound.
