When the trigger is pulled, the trigger causes the sear to release the hammer, or "cock". This piece, holding a bit of flint rock, is pushed forward by a spring, causing the flint to scrape down a curved steel plate, known as the frizzen. This "shaves" sparks off the frizzen and into the priming pan. The pan holds a small amount of gunpowder. This is ignited- and part of the "flash" travels through a small hole (flash hole) and ignites the main powder charge inside the barrel. The rapidly burning gunpowder produces rapidly expanding gasses, which drive the bullet out of the barrel.
