Opening up a HD has more than often left people with a, not sure Id use the word 'corrupt', but a useless HD. Power surges are another source. Excess heat. Sudden shutdown. Moisture in the air. sudden impact (such as letting it fall) etc.. There isn't just one single cause of HDD corruption.
