healthy lungs makes it easy to breath and feeds the rest of your body the oxygen it needs. when the lungs are not healthy its harder to get oxygen
if too little or no oxygen get get through the lungs you will suffocate

∙ 15y agoSmokers lungs generally appear to be "burnt" from inhaling the chemicals present in cigarettes. On the interior of the lung, the tubes (bronchi) become obstructed, making it difficult to breathe at times and may also lead to a disease called Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

∙ 13y agoA smokers lung becomes black from all the years of smoking and sometimes gets holes in it. A normal lung is red also plush, looking healthy. One look at a smokers lung will have you say ewwwww. guarantied

I don't know why anyone would want to do that to themselves?! The pictures of 'smokers' lungs' are usually of the DISEASED lungs of PIGS or even lungs of pigs soaked in chemicals. Coloration of the lungs is caused by disease and the undiseased lungs of a smoker and non-smoker look exactly the same. By the above estimate, a lifetime smoker for fifty years would be carrying 75 pounds of tar in their lungs!!! The amount of tar produced by a typical cigarette is 7 milligrams. The average smoker smokes around 100 cigarettes a week so, in a year, this would add up to around 35 grams or just over an ounce. Some of the tar is exhaled and the macrophages and mucus in the lungs break down all but minute traces of what remains.

I think I would call up the local cancer society and tell them that you have a son who has started to smoke. They have an education section with real smokers lungs as well as other things. A direct look at what could happen to his body may make a bigger impact on him that any thing else.
