A honey bee's means of protecting itself is its stinger at the tip of its abdomen.
The stinger is barbed, like a fishing hook, which means that once it has pierced the victim the bee is unable to withdraw it, so when the bee pulls away it leaves the stinger behind together with the venom sac and the muscles that continue to pump venom in to the victim.
For this reason, the most important thing when stung is to remove the stinger as quickly as possible to limit the amount of venom injected. Scrape it off with a thumb nail, or something like the edge of a credit card.
The side effect of the barbed sting is that a bee can only sting once, and the resulting damage to the abdomen means the bee will die.
