They can hop or jump great distances. Some kangaroos can hop approximately 10 metres or more in a single leap.

Further information:

Kangaroos move around either by a series of hops or bounds, or by a form of half-walk, half-pull, which is slower and a far less efficient means of locomotion. Kangaroos' legs are specially designed for hopping and bounding. They are unable to move independently for walking, and the long hind feet are structured for long leaps rather than running. They also cannot walk in the conventional manner because of the way their body is shaped. When moving slowly, however, kangaroos do have a form of walking. They support themselves with their front legs and tail while they pull their hind legs along.

Kangaroos have large, strong tendons in their hind legs which act as "springs". Every time a kangaroo's feet hits the ground, some of the energy is shifted to the rubber, stored there, then recycled in an elastic bounce. Kangaroos are able to travel long distances at a high speed, expending very little energy. This is linked directly to the physical action of bringing their hind legs up with each hop. Every hop literally refills their lungs.

Up until the age of around 7 months, baby koalas, known as joeys, remain in the mother's pouch. They are carried everywhere in the pouch.

After they emerge from the pouch, they do not venture off on their own, but cling tightly to their mother's back as she moves between branches and trees.
