There's the obvious one: they use Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, QuarkXPress or whatever other programs they like to prepare the graphics for the package. Once they have the graphics, there are a vast number of very specialized programs they use to make the graphic work on a real package. If you're designing a bottle with complex curves and you want to use an "Endura label" (they shrink to fit the bottle's contours; 20-ounce Coke bottles have these labels) there's software to distort the graphic so it looks right on the bottle. There's a program that will make virtual mockups of the package so you can show the customer your work on a computer monitor instead of doing it the old-fashioned way - printing it out on a laser printer and gluing it to a box the same size as yours. There's software that arranges boxes on a printing flat so you use the stock most efficiently, because waste paperboard is expensive and the boxes have to be laid out with the board's grain in mind so they fold properly. And now they've got a program that will show your customer what the new package will look like on a store shelf.
