I have a Pionus aged 25 and she hates the sun and my vet said all Pionus parrots sit in the shade. I think it is probably very unsafe to leave a parrot in the sun unless it can get out of it and get into the shade.
Macaws, being tropical birds, are used to warm climates. But when things get to hot, they tend to hide in the shade of large rainforest trees, below the canopy, where the suns rays can't reach them. They also enjoy hiding in holes on cliffs, or they take a dip in a stream or other body of water. They, don't really swim, they just wet themselves and drink. They're very smart birds, they find ways.

Shivering when wet is the body's attempt to maintain body heat. A wet body loses heat quickly. Failing to maintain body heat will result in hypothermia.
