A person learns by expressing their thoughts and feelings by....

Well, they might not have known that the person really feels that way.

Also, the person might have been holding these thoughts and feelings in, and then after awhile they get so stressed from holding this all in. Then finally, they let it all out (their feelings and thoughts). What they would learn from that is that it's not good to hold things in, let it out because once it's all out, you feel much better inside.

It also makes you feel good inside when you tell the truth. Lying will get you NO WHERE, and it hurts, though you may not feel it.

What can a person do to do to overcome abandonment issues?

Many people struggle with feelings on abandonment. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a good way to learn to retrain those negative thoughts and put positive thoughts in their place. One of the things you learn is how to think realistically about things. Instead of thinking "my friend hates me because they have not answered my text message," you can think "realistically, perhaps their cellphone is turned off or they are in a dead zone." Realistic thinking helps a lot with feelings of abandonment.
