They don't train their young. Training is the human's responsibility. The mother is just responsible for rearing them enough so that they'll be able to be dependent after a year, and teaching them what's best to eat and to trust humans, if the pony mare is used to human contact.

To cart train a Shetland pony, start by familiarizing it with the harness and cart in a safe, enclosed area. Gradually introduce the pony to the cart by first allowing it to explore and then attaching the harness without the cart, ensuring it is comfortable with the equipment. Once the pony is accustomed to the harness, attach the cart and begin with short sessions, rewarding the pony for calm behavior. Always prioritize safety and be patient, gradually increasing the duration and complexity of the training as the pony gains confidence.
