The cougar gets its food like a tiger does. Because it can not run long distances, a cougar stalks its prey and then attacks it from behind. Its first priority to kill its prey is to bite its prey's throat so that the prey can suffocate.

If a puma cannot find it's daily food then it will start targeting other vulnerable prey. If it cannot find this however, it will die from starvation.
A Bengal tiger's main prey is mainly buffalo, young elephants, etc. and they live in India. That should give you some idea! ; )
