The radar antenna sends out a short pulse of radio waves in a direction, then

listens for radio waves coming back. If any radio waves come back, then they

must have hit something and echoed (bounced) back. The time it takes them

to return tells how far away the solid object is that they bounced off of.

Then the antenna turns to a slightly different direction and does the whole thing

again.

What are the functions of a radar?

To detect, track, and sometimes identify objects via the emission of radio waves. Speed radar (like those used by police) can detect nearby objects and calculate their speed. Weather radar can detect the location of clouds and rain. Air traffic radar can detect and track unidentified flying objects. With the help a monopulse secondary surveillance radar, the radar system can identify the individual planes. Higher technology radars can detect and identify distant small objects with great precision.

How stealth aircraft hide them from opponent?

A radar system sends out a wave. When part of this wave hits something, it bounces back to the radar receiver, the radar can then work out the size, location, and also the velocity of the object. A stealth plane is specially made to scatter radar waves across its angular surface. The radar might not be able to detect it, or estimate that the object is far smaller than any military vehicle and therefore not sound any kind of alarm.
