A reader's background can provide context and insight that help them interpret a story's themes, characters, and settings. For example, a reader with knowledge of a certain culture or historical period may better grasp the nuances and references within a particular story. Additionally, a reader's background can influence their emotional response to a story, shaping their perceptions and interpretations.

A character's back story can be manifested through a flashback. A flashback is a snippet of the past that the author selects and chronicles. This can help show parts of the character's life that will teach the reader of things that happened in the time that the story doesn't cover, and it will show what the character has been through and how they have become who they are today. Also, back stories are, well, interesting! They hold for a fascinating story! Note: the stronger the character the better! Develop your characters in as many ways possible!

The more you know, the better you can understand! Everything in your background helps you to understand what you read, because you've lived through that and you already know what it is. For example, someone who's never traveled anywhere outside of their home town might not understand as much about a story where people go to Another Country as someone who has traveled would.
