Distributers are the ones that distribute the CD's. Labels need a distributer to get their CD's to more stores. A label can go to local stores and talk to the managers to get the music onto those stores shelves. For larger retail outlets you will need a distributer. You wont get a distributer unless the CD is good enough. There are independent distributers that help independent labels. Usually it takes a long time and a lot of independent sales to get a good distribution deal.
Starting out I would recommend pressing up as many CD's as you can afford and sell them yourself. Go to local record stores and try to get them on those shelves. Sell you albums at shows the bands perform. Keep track of every sale, so that when it comes time to talk to a distributer you can show the actual sales of the album. If you sell a lot on your own you prove that the CD is selling and are more likely to get a deal with a distributer.
no so their first record label dropped them
After the CD bombed , their record label dropped them . They then eventually got signed with Hollywood records .
The distributers are the middlemen between the record labels and the retail outlets. A poor distribution deal gets your CD onto store shelves that no one goes to. A good deal will put your CD on shelves of popular chains.
the record label numbers are on the record itself just outside the actual label. there will be some numbers letters etc. the number with the circle around it represents the printing.

You should really present your music to a record label first, not a studio. If you wish to present is to a record label you can always mail a CD with your songs to them and sometimes they do respond back.
You can A) hire an agent or a lawyer to pitch your CD to a record label executive (record labels do not listen to unsolicited materials so an agent or a lawyer is required) or B) you can copyright and distribute the CD yourself through channels like CDBaby.com. CD Baby allows you to distribute your music via CDs (at your own expense) or through mp3 downloads through third party music vendors like Spotify and iTunes. CD Baby is a great way to get your music out to the masses. It is fairly inexpensive, easy to use, and takes the hassle out of the how and where factor when it comes to distribution. There are also links to sites that help you copyright your music for a small fee.

By sending a demo or if your lucky you can get discovered by a producer like Dr. Dre discovered Eminem. Try signing to a small record label and making CD's to get a head start.
Most record companies do not accept unsolicited albums. You might consider trying to sell the album yourself online at places like CD Baby and iTunes.
http://musicians.about.com/od/ah/g/cataloguenumber.htmA catalog number is the identification number a record label assigns to a release. It is used for tracking purposes by both the label and the distributor. Catalog numbers are typically printed on the spine of a CD and on the back of record sleeves . . . .
