A rollercoaster works by making use of gravity, hence the initial large hill you go down or magnetically-powered "rail-gun" launch at the start of the ride. A rollercoaster does not have any form of propulsion in the cars themselves, inertia is the only thing that keeps it going, without careful track planning a rollercoaster can actually stop somewhere along the track because it runs out of kinetic energy!
