Echinoderms include sea urchins, sea stars and starfish. The meaning of echinoderm is 'spiny skin'. Therefore one method of protection is spines that can break off in a potential predator and cause irritation, some species such as the crown of thorns starfish have poisonous spines. Tough skin puts of other predators. Most echinoderms have remarkable self restoring abilities; the starfish can regrow itself from a small piece of its body as long as that piece contains a sufficient portion of its 'mouth and water vascular system' (i.e. the centre bit of the star).

They are cold blooded so their bodies and blood are same temperature as their surroundings, so to maintain homeostasis, they have to be in warm places for their blood to flow naturally.
