Sound card process the audio of your computer. It interprets the waveforms from the digital or analog to a sonic signal that produce a sound from your computer. There are different types of sound cards; PCI card that is installed and connected to the inside slot of the computer, and PCMI which are external commonly used for laptop. Does the Alesis Master Control still require a sound card such as RME etc?

I don't believe so. I own it and run it on a PC with a sound card but I had to disable it in order to run the device without conflicts. It now functions as my sound card. I haven't tried the device with the sound card enabled but I can imagine some kind of issue arising when using WMP or any other program that plays audio. Just disable the sound card and you should be fine.
