The basic approach of antiviruses relies on analyzing known malware, extracting characteristic portions of the code and creating signatures for them.
This database of signatures will then be used to detect malware by scanning suspect files. This is a overly simplified view of course.
Antiviruses also use heuristics which are "guesses" or rules of thumbs that enable them to either spot variants of known malware (based on similarity) or (less commonly) completely new malware.

∙ 15y agoAntivirus software works buy updating definition. Definitions are summaries of malware and or their behavoirs. When the software reads a file and sees something that looks like its definitions than it checks again for certainty and then alerts the user. Antivirus software's principles are pretty old. What makes one better than the other is extra features. You know update libraries, wifi intrusion detection, network security, etc. I recommend AVG 8 Free, Windows Live Onecare, Trend Micro internet Security 17.
