Earthquakes happen because of the shifting of tectonic plates. Its called a transform boundary. Its when one plate moves along another plate, causing a release of friction between the two plates. This happens often with the North America plate and the Pacific plate, or as most people know it, California. The pacific plate is moving up and moving against the west end of the N. America plate which is why there are so many earthquakes in California.
Hope this helps!!
