An ice shelf forms when snow and ice accumulate on land, eventually flowing towards the ocean due to gravity. As the ice reaches the ocean, it forms a floating platform of ice that extends from the coastline, known as an ice shelf. Warmer ocean waters underneath the ice shelf can cause melting and calving of large icebergs from the shelf's edge.
