I had to do this a few years ago when my computer went bad. Usually, you'll get on the phone with them, they'll ask you to go to a website and input a code of some kind and some other information which is given to you by the computer technician on the phone helping you. In short, call the technician and they will often walk you through the entire process.

You can control your personal computer remotely by using many of the programs available online including the teamviewer software. The actual steps to gaining control would depend on the software you are using. Most however would do it through a password and login.
