Iron rusts when it reacts with water and oxygen. Some iron nails and other iron products do not rust because they are painted, coated in plastic or galvanized (coated in oil) to protect the metal from reacting with water and oxygen and rusting. Some iron products are use sacrificial metals- they are coated in another more reactive metal- to prevent rusting. Iron nails can rust even if they do not come into contact with water because of moisture in the air.

Zinc and iron do not alloy well. If you did create the alloy, the zinc would tend to oxidize before the iron because it is a more electrochemically active metal. The protection from oxidation (rust) is most commonly achieved by plating or otherwise coating the surface of the iron with zinc. The metal, thus protected, is referred to as having been galvanized.

No. Paint keeps the iron from oxidizing and creating rust. The nail must be rust free before the paint is applied.

The rusting of iron occurs when this metal comes in contact with oxygen in the air or water. Rusting is a chemical change that takes place through the process of oxidation.

Why are roofing nails zinc coated?

You don't want stuff falling off your roof, so you don't want the nails to rust. Zinc, unlike other metals, will not rust, so you wrap the nail with a coat of zinc to prevent rusting.

How does coating iron prevent rusting?

Coating prevent the iron from contacting air and moisture. So it prevents iron from rusting.

Is ordinairy nails an alloy?

Normally nails aren't made of an alloy however they are galvanized, this means they have a coating of a less reactive metal such as Zinc as to prevent rusting of the nails. Nails are normally made out of iron.

It decreases rusting but doesn't totally prevent it.

Can rusting iron nails be a chemical change?

Rusting of iron is chemical. It is the combination of oxygen with the iron, creating a different chemical: rust or iron oxide.
