There are several ways owls (and other birds) tolerate cold (fridgid) weather. They eat, then conserve energy by entering a state of hypothermia in which they lower their core temperature, slowing their hearts and metabolism. Birds have an oil of sorts which coats their feathers (which grow out denser for winter) and it acts as an insulator against the wind, in addition they fluff their feathers and create pockets of warm air.
If you backyard feed birds in the spring and summer the birds become reliant upon you for food. Please be a year-round friend by keeping your feeders full in all seasons, our feathered friends become dependant on your generousity and need the seed to stay warm!
