The Dr explained to me, the reason why this works is noradrenalin or epinerphrine restricts blood vesels slowing blood flow from the area, which in turn slows down the process of the anestetic getting flushed out of the area and ultimately cleared by the body in whatever way it does so.

As a matter of fact Professional Body Piercers can use injection freezing at all, we are not health care providers and are not allowed to use injection anestetic. Topical freezing caused the tissue to swell, because it has to be absorbed into the tissue from the outside in, in doing this it causes the tissue to distort and actually makes the piercing more difficult. Bottom line is a nostril piercing is quick and almost painless, small poke, very fast, your eye might water and then its done.
