Physically - Anorexia causes weight loss. The lack of vitamins, minerals, and nurtients in the body can cause dry, flaky skin. Hair loss can occur, or hair will thin, become more dull, become more brittle or fragile, lose its "shine", or become lank. A thin, peach-fuzz like hair, called lanugo, can grow as the body tries to compensate for lost body fat. Bones can protrude with weight loss, and skin can look taut or drawn tightly across the body. Anorexia can affect the function of organs like the heart, lungs, and kisdneys, causing them to mal-function, slow down, or possibly even stop altogether (in more serious cases). It can also make people dizzy and prone to fainting, along with being ultra-sensitive to the cold.
Mentally - Anorexia often happens due to a problem with a person's body image, or how they view themselves. This could be caused by / lead to depression. There is often low-self-esteem in people who suffer from anorexia. Some many become mroe secretive and isolated, possibly feeling like they are alone and / or can't trust anybody else. Many will develop odd rituals or habits, almost alwasy involving food, exercise, or clothing.
There are many emotional side-effects and symptoms that cause or accompany anorexia including depression, OCD, BDD (Body Dismorphic Disorder), lack of trust, paranoia, low self-esteem, low sense of self worth, and suicide risk.
