Autism Spectrum Disorders are classified as a mental health disorder in the DSM, the diagnostic manual used by psychologist and psychiatrist to diagnose mental health conditions. However, autism is actually a neurobiological different, where those of us with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders) are born with brains that works differently than the neuro-typical population. That being said, due to some of the symptomology of the disorder, from social difficulties to hyper/hypo sensitivities, people with autism tend to have higher prevalence of stress and anxiety related disorders, and major depression than the typical population. Being overwhelmed by your surroundings, misunderstanding others or other misunderstanding you, and continually feeling different can take a toll on anyone’s mental health.

Whether you consider autism to be a mental health condition or not depends on how you define a mental health condition. Autism is a neurological difference so it is no more a mental health condition than being neurotypical, it's just a different form of brain development. Autism is not a mental health problem or mental health disorder because that would imply that neurotypical brains are the ideal and autistic people are somehow broken - we're not.
