Black smoke is soot, particles of carbon.

It forms due to a shortage of oxygen preventing full combustion.

Some occasional black smoke is normal in diesel engines, especially when under heavy load (e.g. rapid acceleration, climbing hills).

However a gasoline engine should never produce black smoke! The most common cause of black smoke in a gasoline engine is oil leaking into the cylinders and burning, the most common ways oil enters the cylinders are a blown head gasket or damaged piston rings; both of which are very serious problems which will likely be expensive to repair!!!
