The Earth's surface is made up of a number of large 'plates' which are actually 'floating' very slowly, on a layer of magma (molten rock). When the edges of these plates slide past each other, sometimes they get stuck - this builds up huge amounts of pressure. Eventually the pressure gets too much, and they 'snap' apart - the movement is what we experience as an earthquake.
