An Evaporite is a sedimentary deposit that results from the evaporation of seawater.

They can form in two ways:-

  1. Sabkhas are supratidal evaporite-carbonate deposits forming along low lying, arid Coastlines. Here the deposit forms just below the soil surface on land and is typically thin.
  2. Evaporite deposits can also occur in closed marine basins where evaporation exceeds inflow. Here the deposit forms at the floor and shoreline of the evaporating water body and the deposits can get very thick.
