If you have the desire for fashion, you can probably design some sketches on your own. You do not need to be a professional artist. However, if you want to learn to do sketches that look like what the fashion designers use, you can take some art classes (such as figure drawing), or you can watch tutorial videos on Youtube.
Getting into a top fashion school can be competitive and challenging, but having a great admissions portfolio can give you the edge you need over your competitors. Here are some tips to making a great fashion portfolio. • Know your audience. It is important to know what the admission requirements are for the particular fashion school you are applying to. Know what they are looking for and tailor your portfolio to suit their needs. Do not submit a “one-size-fits-all” portfolio, because as we know in fashion, what works for one person does not work for another. Submitting a portfolio that does not meet the admission requirements will only guarantee you not being accepted to that school. • Show a variety of pieces in your portfolio. Fashion school admission departments do not want to see several different variations of pants or shirts that you have designed or created. They want to see that you know how to work with different materials, that you know how to design anything from ready-to-wear to run way fashion. Including a variety of work in your portfolio will ensure that the admissions department is familiar with all the different aspects of design in which you are talented. • Create a portfolio that you are proud to present. First impressions are everything, and your portfolio is going to be the first thing the admissions department looks at. It is not so important to have the most expensive portfolio available. What is important, however, is that your portfolio is neat and organized. You should not only be proud of the work that you have included in your portfolio but you should also be proud of its appearance. It is very important that you are aware of the admission requirements of the fashion school you are applying to. Contact the school, ask what the requirements are, write them down and check them off once they have been included in your portfolio. Most people only get one chance to showcase their work, so make it a good one.

Usually it is an art portfolio case, usually black ,with plastic sheets inside. You will put your sketches, photos of any clothing you may have made, and inspiration in the sheets. Your sketches should be on large sketch paper large enough to fill the sheets. Including swatches will help sell the look. Sketches don't have to be perfect as long as you can get your point across. If you have made any clothes yourself or just styled someone include photos of those as well. Its best to use a model rather than just taking photos of the clothes by themselves. Arrange a few pics of each article "look" on its own page. Finally inspiration boards. This is a page where you show what inspires you and what describes you and your look. Usually pictures of nature, artwork, old movies, vintage clothes, magazine ads and layouts, pics you have taken of odds and ends. Arrange all these sheets as you like and make sure to check the school's portfolio requirements. Most usually say what they want. Some have even asked for you to brings finished garments you may have made though usually not required.
